Description
The Railway Hotel, now a public house, was built around 1850. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond on a stone plinth, with stone dressings that are currently painted, and features a slate roof. The building has two storeys and three bays, with rusticated quoins and a prominently projecting cornice. The slightly projecting porch also includes rusticated quoins and an inset semi-circular arch. On either side of the porch are tall tripartite windows, which have moulded architraves and mullions designed as attenuated pilasters that extend down to the plinth. A similar but simpler window is located at the back on the first floor. All first-floor windows feature moulded architraves and sills supported by consoles. Above the cornice, there is a rectangular panel supported by volutes, which displays the word "HOTEL" in low relief. The building has gable stacks. The Preston and Wyre railway reached Kirkham in 1840, and this hotel is noted as a good example of its type.
