Description
Solomons is a house located on Rye Road in Hawkhurst, originally built in the 18th century with a refronting of an earlier core and extended in 1843. The building features a timber frame clad with red and blue chequered brick, as well as tile hanging and rendering on the first floors. It has a plain tiled roof and consists of two parallel ranges. The house is two storeys tall, set on a plinth, with a half-hipped roof to the left and stacks at the end right and projecting at the end left. The front facade has a regular arrangement of two glazing bar sashes on each floor, with a central door that has six raised and fielded panels, a rectangular fanlight, and a moulded flat hood supported by brackets, all positioned to the left of the facade. There is a rear wing that is one storey with an attic and has end stacks. The left return wall is not bonded to the front elevation. Inside, the front range retains evidence of an earlier frame, likely from the 17th century, featuring gunstock jowls. There is a large 18th-century brick fireplace with a chestnut chimney bressummer. A letter found in the house, dated 1843, details the construction of the rear wing.
