Description
Shropshire House is a house located on Shrewsbury Street in Prees, originally built in the 17th century and refronted in the late 18th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features a rendered timber frame that is clad in 18th-century red brick at the front and has a slate roof. The original structure consists of three framed bays, with the eaves raised and brick cladding added in the late 18th century. It is two storeys tall with an attic and has a dentilled eaves cornice. The front has three windows, which are three-light 19th-century segmental-headed casements, with late 19th-century gabled eaves dormers directly above them. The main entrance is located between the first and second windows from the left, featuring a plain pilastered doorcase with a four-panel door, where the top panels have been glazed. There is a similar entrance at the far right. A red brick ridge stack is positioned between the second and third windows from the left, with an integral end stack to the left.
Inside, the timber frame with square panels is exposed on the original back wall of the ground floor, and fragmentarily on the cross-wall to the right of the entrance and the right gable end on the first floor. The attic reveals a single-purlin roof in three bays, with collar and tie-beam trusses visible. A gabled range at right angles to the rear was rebuilt in the late 20th century and is not of special architectural interest.
