Description
This is an early 19th-century house and shop located on Effingham Street, Ramsgate. The front elevation is of stock brick, which has been pebble-dashed and painted. It is three storeys high, built on a plinth, and features a cill band to the second floor, topped with a parapet. The second floor has two replacement glazing bar casement windows, and one window to the right on the ground floor. A two-storey canted bay is on the left side, with replacement windows on the first floor and plate glass windows on the ground floor. The front door, to the right, is within a panelled surround and includes a semi-circular fanlight and a pilastered doorcase with a triglyph entablature blocks supporting an open pediment. A blocked, semi-circular headed passageway is at the end on the right, now containing a display window. The building has extensive wings to the rear. The 1822 map by Shown or Collard and Hursts depicts the building (historical details are found in listing 13/110). It is included on the list for its group value.
