Description
Cavendish Baptist Church is a chapel built in 1840 by James Wilson of Bath for £4,000. It is designed in a Neo-Norman style and constructed of white brick with rendered details. The building features a moulded plinth that supports three pairs of octagonal turrets, topped with a bracketed parapet that rises as a gable over the center. The front has two paired round-headed lancets on either side of the central piers, which include a cill band and three roll-moulded orders. The central window has a multi-order surround that extends down to the plinth, featuring three lights with intersecting heads. On either side, giant arches frame traceried plank and stud doors, which have attached columns and moulded surrounds, topped with a Lombard frieze. The side and rear elevations are plain. The main elevation's width reflects its position as the side of the chapel.
Inside, the church has a large, unaisled space with arcaded galleries on the end walls and minimal decoration, limited to window mouldings and a cornice. Initially, the architect and the client, Reverend James Matlock Daniell, planned for a belfry, but this was opposed by Trinity House, which had previously donated £1,000 to St. Georges. Daniell also named Cavendish Street after the road developed between 1839 and 1880 by Ramsgate builders Woodward and Grundy.
