Description

This building began as assembly rooms, dating from the 1840s, and is now a snooker club. It’s located on the south side of George Street, Ramsgate. Constructed of stock brick with a red brick parapet, it features rendered details and a slate roof. The single-story main section sits atop a rusticated basement, exhibiting a moulded cill band and rusticated quoins to the cornice parapet. Brick courses added in the 20th century cover the roof, which is hipped to the left and gabled to the right, with a stack present. The façade includes six large casement windows with glazing bars in moulded surrounds with cornices, and five blank, keyed window spaces within the basement. A double-panelled door, topped with a cornice, is set within a recessed wing, accompanied by a glazing bar sash window above. To the left return is an additional glazing bar casement and a boarded door. A second, two-story recessed wing stands to the right, lacking the rendered details and featuring a glazing bar sash window on each floor. Originally the Royal Assembly Rooms in the late 19th century, the building subsequently served as headquarters for the Volunteer Battalion, Shanly’s Electric Theatre (opened December 1911), the Star Cinema, a furniture warehouse, and most recently, a snooker club. It was likely built by Woodland and Grundy, local builders who developed Caven dish Street and George Street after 1839.
