Description
Albion House is a terrace house dating from around 1790, which has been altered in the mid-19th century and is currently used as offices. The building is rendered and features a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall with an attic and has a parapet to its Mansard roof, which includes three flat-roofed dormers and chimney stacks on both sides.
The front facade has a regular arrangement of windows, with five sashes in moulded surrounds on the second floor and five double-hung sashes on the first floor. The first floor also features a tented verandah supported by simple piers with scrolled brackets and geometric pattern rails, which returns to the right side elevation. On the ground floor, there are four sashes with moulded surrounds, and a central door made up of six raised and fielded panels topped by a semi-circular fanlight with a hollow chamfered rebate and moulded surround, flanked by pilasters, leading up to a flight of five steps.
The right return of the building includes a moulded oculus in the gable end, two sashes, and a central blank panel on each floor, with a glazing bar sash on the first floor, all in moulded surrounds. There are also three-storey and one-storey extensions beyond, featuring sashes and wooden casements.
Inside, there is an original open string geometric staircase that reaches the full height of the building, with moulded principals and unturned balusters. Some original fireplaces can be found in the rooms on the top storey. Additionally, a town council chamber was added to the rear, featuring mid-20th century classical decor. Albion House was one of several residences used by the Duchess of Kent and Princess Victoria in Ramsgate around 1830.
