Description

The Memorial to the Great War, located on Madeira Walk in Ramsgate, was created in 1920 by the sculptor Gilbert Bayes. This war memorial is made of Portland stone and features a lifesize nude figure, depicted shrouded and holding her head, which suggests a theme of awakening from the dead. The figure sits atop a pedestal that is placed on a paved platform, which includes a mosaic circle around its base and three steps leading down. At the back of the pedestal, there is a segmental panel inscribed with the words: "The Great War 1914-1918: TO ALL WHO SERVED HONOUR." The base of the pedestal is signed by Gilbert Bayes, indicating its date of creation.
