Description
8 and 10 New Road are a pair of terraced houses, now used as offices, built around 1812. They are constructed of brick with a rendered basement, a weatherboarded rear, and a brick party wall, topped with hipped slate roofs. This building is designed in the Late Georgian style and features a double-depth plan.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a basement, with a six-window range. The houses are raised over a full basement, showcasing a thin cornice and a coped parapet. The ground-floor openings are set in elliptical-arched recesses, connected by channelled impost bands. There are steps leading up to the left-hand doorways, which have 8-panel doors, narrow overlights with pointed-arched panes, and 6/6-pane sash windows, along with 3/6-pane sash windows on the second floor. The basement features wide 10/10-pane sash windows and doorways located under the stairs.
Inside No. 8, there is a central lateral dogleg stair with stick balusters, a curtail and wreathed rail, and a glazed lantern dome. Round arches separate the entrance hall from other areas. The two houses are connected internally. Historically, these houses are part of a varied terrace that began construction in 1794 and represent the most advanced architectural style in Chatham, despite the outdated timber-framed rear elevation.
