Description

A pair of terraced houses at 4 and 6 New Road, Chatham, dated 1812. They are now used as offices. The houses were built as part of a terrace that began in 1794. They are constructed of brick, with a rendered basement, weatherboarding to the rear, a brick party wall, and ridge stacks. The roofs are of slate, hipped in form. The houses are three storeys high, with a basement, and have a four-window frontage. A thin cornice sits above the ground floor, surmounted by a coped parapet that rises to a central pediment containing an oval panel inscribed with the date 1812. The ground floor windows are set within elliptical-arched recesses, connected by channelled bands. Steps lead to the front doors, which are six-panel designs with overlights. The first floor windows are twelve-pane sashes, while the second floor has sash windows with three panes over six. Number 4 has a large, mid-20th century two-storey oriel with three plate-glass sashes. The interior has been altered in the mid-20th century. Despite the anachronistic use of a timber-framed rear elevation, the buildings represent a later phase of development within the terrace.
