Description
The Statue of Thomas Waghorn, erected in 1888, is a notable monument located on New Road in Chatham. Designed by founder J Moore, the statue is made of limestone ashlar and bronze. It features a square battered plinth adorned with cast panels that are inscribed with the following text: "THOMAS F WAGHORN/LIEUT R N, PIONEER AND FOUNDER OF THE OVERLAND ROUTE/BORN CHATHAM 1800/DIED JANUARY 7 1850." Atop the plinth stands a figure of Waghorn in a coat, holding a map and pointing north.
