Description
No. 2 New Road is a terraced house, now used as an office, built around 1812 and extended in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick and render, with party wall stacks, and the roof is not visible.
The exterior features three storeys and a basement, with a total of seven windows across the front. It is raised over a full brick basement and has a coped parapet. The left side of the building is the original three-storey section from the early 19th century, while the right side is a two-storey extension from the late 19th century. The entrance is centrally located in the extension, and there is a full-width canted bay on the right.
The original 1812 section has round-arched recesses on the ground and first floors, connected by a channelled impost band. It features 6/6-pane sash windows on the ground and first floors, with a 3/6-pane sash on the second floor. The mid-20th century basement windows and the right-hand door are separated by low buttresses. The right-hand section has a double flight of stairs curving up from the centre of the bay to either side, leading to double half-glazed mid-20th century doors with a six-pane overlight. The first-floor sash window is plate glass, and the three-light bay has 6/6-pane sashes, with the middle one set in a flat-headed recess.
The interior has been altered in the mid-20th century. Historically, this building is part of a varied terrace that began construction in 1794 and represents one of the most advanced developments in Chatham.
