Description

East Cliff House is a house dating to around 1825, built for William Miller. It is constructed of stock brick with rendered details and has a slate roof. The house is three storeys high with a basement. The base is rusticated with a string course that rises over projecting pedestals supporting giant Doric pilasters on the first and second floors, topped by a moulded cill band to the second floor. A full entablature extends to the parapet, with stacks positioned to the left and right. The windows are regularly spaced, with glazing bar sashes in moulded surrounds. The second floor features 3 glazing bar sashes (16, 12, and 16 panes), while the first floor has 3 elongated glazing bar sashes with moulded surrounds, a frieze, a cornice, and sunk aprons. Bow windows flank the ground floor, each featuring tripartite glazing bar sashes, pilasters, and a heavy frieze and cornice. A half-glazed door is centrally positioned within a projecting porch featuring fluted Doric columns and a heavy frieze and cornice, topped with a rectangular fanlight. The basement has glazing bar sashes. A single-storey rusticated extension is attached to the right, incorporating a glazing bar sash. A plaque inscribed with the name "East Cliff House" is located above the central first-floor window. William Miller was a shipwright; his yards on the beaches below were connected to East Cliff House by a tunnel through the chalk.
