Description
The Cottage is a Grade II listed building located on Main Street in Penshurst. It features a Queen Anne style facade that conceals a 16th-century framed structure. The building is two stories high and includes dormers, with a ridge tile roof and a central chimney stack. The exterior is made of brick, accented by a brick band. A notable feature is the ornamental three-centred brick moulding above the door, which is likely from the 19th century.
On the ground floor, there is a restored panelled doorway with top lights, surrounded by egg and dart moulding along the chamfered edges of the panels. Flanking the door are two octagonal projecting bay windows with sash bars, supported by carved wooden brackets. The doorway is sheltered by a projecting hood, also supported by carved wooden brackets resting on stone corbels. A continuous dentilled moulding forms the cornice for both the bay windows and the hood.
On the first floor, there are two sash windows in exposed frames, with a dentilled frieze and cornice that support the gutter. The building features two hip tiled dormers with heavy oversailing moulded eaves and casement windows, all with glazing bars.
The Cottage, along with Quaintways Tea Rooms, Colquhoun House, and Longford, forms a group with Kirkwood Garden Shop and La Petite Hair Salon.
