Description
Barn. Constructed around the early 18th century. It is a weatherboarded timber-frame building set on a brick plinth, featuring a plain clay tile roof with half-hipped ends and a hipped midstrey with deeply overhanging eaves at the front. The south end wall was damaged in a 1987 storm. The barn comprises five bays, with a wider central bay separated from the others by low partitions, and a midstrey at the front. There are outshuts at the front on either side of the midstrey, which may have originally been open. The east front has a central hipped-roof midstrey on brick piers, with a small doorway and window to its left. Plank doors provide access at the rear (west) to a central waggon entrance. Internally, most of the timber frame remains, with close studded walls reinforced by tension braces. Features include jowled posts, arch braces to the tie-beam, and queen-post trusses. The roof is a common rafter design without a ridge piece, incorporating staggered butt purlins and straight wind braces over the central bay. Low boarded stud partitions on brick plinths flank the central bay.
