Description

A barn, originally dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, and subsequently used as accommodation, with alterations and additions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The barn is timber framed and has weatherboard cladding, with some replacement sections in breeze block and concreted brick infill. It stands partly on a rubble stone and brick plinth and features a hipped plain tile roof. The original barn comprises three bays, fully aisled, with opposed central cart entries. A left (south) aisle has been replaced by a separately framed wing from the 18th century, creating a four-bay elevation. A projecting 20th-century shelter-shed obscures the left bay. At the rear, the three right-hand bays are hidden by a late 19th-century two-story gabled addition. The front features a cart entry rising through the eaves under a hipped gable, where the original doors have been replaced with a smaller door, windows, and an overlight. Two small windows and a board door are on the right. At the rear, the left bay shows exposed wall studs. The left return has two inserted doorways, one of which is blocked, and a window. The right return has a small inserted window. The interior retains much of the original timber framing, including large aisle posts with arch braces to aisle plates, tie-beams, wall-ties, and wall studs on a sole plate. There are old rafters, and the left wing has raking queen posts supporting the principal rafters. Inserted partitioning, floors, and ceilings are also present.
