Description
Barn. Probably dating from the 17th century, with alterations in the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries. The barn is timber-framed with brick infill, a plinth, and some additions, with weatherboarding and plain tiled roofs. It has seven bays running north-east to south-west; a wagon bay, the third from the north-east end, features opposed cart entries with double doors. The timber framing is partially three panels from sill to wall-plate, and partially long rectangular panels, with long straight braces across some lower corners. No trusses are visible from the exterior. The south-east elevation includes a lean-to addition with a catslide roof to the first two bays, a 19th-century wing projecting from the third bay, rectangular openings in the fourth bay, a double doorway in the fifth bay, and a further 19th-century wing projecting from the sixth bay. Both 19th-century wings have two levels, with dentilled eaves cornices and header ventilation courses to the upper levels; ground floor openings and attic lights have cambered heads. Inside, there are intermediate collar and tie-beam trusses with two struts, and two tiers of trenched purlins. Very substantial timbers are visible internally, thought to be of medieval origin and reused in the barn’s construction. 19th-century pulley equipment is retained at the south-west end. Due to its group value in this location, it’s considered a building of local importance.
