Description

Holmwood House is a small country house of 1893, designed by Temple Moore. It is constructed of brick with rough cast render, ashlar dressings, and has a slate roof with five red brick stacks. Ashlar quoins define the corners. The house is two storeys plus an attic and basement.

The southwest front, facing the road, has six bays, with an ashlar plinth, a moulded band at the first floor level, and a wooden bracketed cornice. An off-centre doorway is set within a large ashlar window surround, featuring part-glazed double doors in the lower half, and ashlar mullions and leaded lights above. To the right of the doorway is a single window, and to the left, four windows, all with ashlar mullions and leaded lights. Above are six smaller ashlar cross-mullion windows, also with leaded lights. The northwest front, with five bays, has varied single-light basement windows with ashlar surrounds, and four ashlar cross-mullion windows above, with three smaller, similar windows in the upper storey. The southeast front is similar in design, though the window arrangement is more irregular.

The northeast entrance front is distinguished by three gables with ashlar coping, finials, and kneelers. The central doorway has a round-arched ashlar surround decorated with carved figures at the impost and keystone; the door itself is boarded. Above the doorway is a large, fifteen-light cross-mullion window that illuminates the stairwell. The remaining windows on this front are irregularly spaced, two and three-light mullion windows.

The interior features a full-height, centrally located staircase hall with a three-flight staircase. The staircase has bulbous balusters and Doric columns surrounding the upper landing, leading to a circular cupola which lights the stairwell. The Drawing Room and Library are fully panelled, along with numerous other rooms. These rooms all have contemporary fireplaces and ceilings.
