Description
Appletree Cottage is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with early 19th-century features and some minor 20th-century additions. The front is made of stone and has a tiled roof. It is primarily a timber-framed building, with a small addition on the west side from the early 19th century and a garage added on the east side in the late 20th century. The front, which faces south, has two storeys and four windows. The roof is hipped at the west end, and the eaves line is interrupted by the heads of the upper windows, with a shafted stack. The walls are made of ironstone with brick dressings, and the windows are casements. There is a shallow porch from the 20th century, featuring a boarded front to the gable and rendered cheeks, along with a boarded door in a plain frame that leads to a former second cottage on the east side. The long north elevation showcases exposed timber framing with massive timbers and large arch-bracing, filled with ironstone and a few brick panels. The west side has some lighter framing and ends with a short section of brick. The west end is tile-hung above the stone walls, while the upper east end displays exposed framing. A date mark of 1590 is present on the building.
