Description

A house and infant school, originally dating back to the 17th century, with significant development in 1755, 1872, and 1893. The house part was largely rebuilt in 1755, while the school building was added in 1872 and extended in 1893. The building’s walls are stone, with a tiled roof. The two-storey house front (east side) has three windows above two, under a hipped roof with a catslide to the rear. The front wall is constructed of small stones in courses, featuring ironstone galletting, brick quoins, a first-floor band, and a plinth. The north and west walls are of larger stone rubble. Casement windows are present throughout. A 20th-century doorway replaces an earlier entrance. Inside the house, a 17th-century chimney breast and old beams offer indications of the house’s earlier form, suggesting a later refacing. The late 19th-century school is a long block attached to the house's end, with a later cross wing and small outshots, all single-storey in height. These elements have a tiled roof and stone walls with brick dressings, incorporating casement windows. The south side of the house blends into the school building, with upper walls that are tile-hung. Inside, a 17th-century beam and an 18th-century fireplace remain. The house was founded in 1755 as a free school for 12 poor children by the Reverend George Holmes.
