Description
Arford Lodge is a dwelling that served as the stable wing of Arford House, built in the early 19th century. The structure is made of brick, with some stucco, and has a slate roof. It is located on a steep valley side and features an L-shaped design. The building is lower than the east wing of Arford House, with two storeys on the shorter south elevation, which connects to Arford House, and a tall three-storey elevation on the long east side that stands on the valley floor.
The south elevation, which is stuccoed, has four different upper windows, one ground floor window, and a wide French door. The entrance yard elevations have five and two openings, featuring small Gothic light windows and doorways with flat-oval arches. A 20th-century porch partially obscures the wide cambered arch of the carriage doorway. The east elevation includes seven windows on the first and second floors, while the ground floor has six doors that provide access to cellars built into the hillside. The walls are painted brickwork in header bond, with rubbed flat arches and ground floor oval arches. Many of the windows have been filled in, but two still have their original sashes. The north elevation has three storeys, two windows, and Flemish bond brickwork, along with small Gothic windows and a ground floor oval arch leading to a carriage opening. A stone wall projects from the northwest corner to support the higher stable yard.
