Description
Waterden Cottage is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with later additions from the 17th or 18th century. It features a timber frame combined with brick and stone, topped by a clay-tiled roof. There are external stacks at the west end and another on the ridge. The easternmost bay was either added or replaced during the 17th or 18th century, and at the same time, the house was extended along its north side.
The south front has 20th-century brickwork that is plastered, with a front door located where a possible original cross passage might have been. There are three sets of casement windows on both the ground and first floors. The east front is plastered and tile-hung, with the timber framing exposed at the north corner. The north front features random stonework and brick on the ground floor, with two staircases extending as gabled wings, which are timber-framed and tile-hung. The west front has an external stack that is now plastered, and there is a single-storey 20th-century garage that abuts the building.
Inside, the cottage retains significant parts of its original 16th-century or earlier frame, which consists of two bays of unequal length. The original structure has been modified by rebuilding the west end, inserting a large stack in the position of the cross passage, adding or replacing a further timber-framed bay to the east, and rebuilding the south wall in brick during the 20th century. The principal remains of the original structure include principal posts, mid-rails, exposed mantle and daub in the north wall, and the two easternmost tie-beams on the ground floor, along with principal posts, studs, wall-plates, and tie-beams on the first floor.
