Description
The Old Farmhouse is a farmhouse, later adapted for residential use, dating back to the 16th century. An original range runs east to west, with a refronting in the 18th century and a further extension to the south in the early 19th century. The original range is timber-framed on a stone rubble plinth with flint galleting, with a tile-hung north front, a red brick west front, and a red brick south-east front. Most of the roof is tiled, although the front slope of the west range is slate. There are three brick chimney stacks.
The east front shows an exposed timber frame with a midrail, jowled posts, and curved braces, with a 20th-century casement window on each floor. The south-east elevation has a blocked original diamond mullioned window, alongside a 20th-century casement to the ground floor. The north front is tile-hung with three 19th-century casement windows and two tall 20th-century fixed windows on the ground floor. The west front displays diaper brickwork in one bay, featuring a larger cambered opening on each floor with 19th-century casements. It also includes a doorcase with an early 19th-century four-panelled door and a wooden gabled tiled weatherhood supported on brackets. An early 19th-century one-bay addition is located to the south-west, with a tall mullioned and transomed casement window. The south-east catslide is brick-built in English bond, with a blocked opening to the right, a three-light casement window to the centre, and a plank door to the left. A mid-19th century lean-to brick extension with a slate roof is on the south side.
The original parlour features a large open fireplace with a reduced 18th-century wooden bressumer and a cupboard inserted to the right. It contains two-inch chamfered beams with triangular stops, and similar floor joists. The kitchen has exposed beams and a three-plank door on pintle hinges. The dining room has two 18th-century wooden china cupboards, a six-panelled door, and a dado rail. The outshut retains original struts, an open fireplace, and a built-in oven or copper, with two plank doors. One bedroom has a brick fireplace with a wooden bressumer and chamfered beam with lambs tongue stops. An 18th-century bedroom above the dining room is panelled on one wall, with two-panelled cupboards, a fireplace surround with a shelf, bolection moulding, an early 19th-century firegrate, and late 19th-century tiles. A 20th-century staircase is present. An earlier staircase may have been located in the present kitchen, as some ceiling joists are unchamfered. The roof was not inspected but appears to be original and possibly of queenpost type. A mummified cat was reportedly found in a box in the roof.
