Description
Stonepitts Manor House is a large house that has an Elizabethan appearance on the outside, although it has undergone significant restoration and features large windows in the Elizabethan style. Inside, there are remnants of a much older house, possibly from the 14th or early 15th century, but the extent of alterations makes it hard to determine its original form.
The north elevation showcases projecting coupled gables with the main entrance and a carved stone doorway. The house has a stone plinth, Tudor brickwork, and a tiled roof. The windows are casements with wooden mullions and transoms, and there is a large mullioned window that lights the hall. The layout follows a typical Elizabethan plan, featuring a large hall and a staircase leading to a gallery. The main entrance is positioned to one side, providing access to a corridor beneath the gallery, with the hall to the right and the kitchen and buttery to the left. Some original brickwork features carved mouldings above the windows.
The side elevations are constructed of random stone with brick quoins, while the south elevation has mostly modern restoration with brick and tile hanging. Inside, there is a substantial amount of timber, much of which has been relocated, including a beam with nailhead moulding and a well-crafted hall ceiling with heavily moulded beams and joists.
