Description

The Old Vicarage is a house dating from the 16th century, with additions and alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is timber-framed and largely brick-clad, with some rendered sections; the roof is steeply pitched and tiled. The house has a brick and rubble plinth, a band running along the first floor, and cogged eaves at the rear. It includes coped gables, a single ridge stack, and one external gable stack. The house is two storeys high, with three bays, and an L-shaped plan.

The south front features a close-boarded and weatherstripped door set within a re-entrant angle, under a pantiled hood supported by curved brackets. To the left of the door is a single sash window with glazing bars; to the right, a single fixed window. Above the door and windows are two sash windows with glazing bars. The west gable has single sash windows with glazing bars on both floors. The east wing includes a three-light casement window and, above it, a single sash window with glazing bars. The south gable has a single round-headed fixed window and, above it, a 20th-century casement window. The rear elevation has 20th-century windows.

The interior retains extensive timber framing, including arch braces, moulded beams, and fireplace bressummers. There are stud partitions and a 16th-century four-centred arched doorway. A principal rafter roof from the 17th century is also present, as are gypsum floors. Evidence suggests the rectangular rear wing was initially constructed, followed by the addition of the east wing in the 17th century.
