Description
The Misterton Methodist Church was built in 1878. It is constructed of red brick with blue brick and gault brick detailing, and has ashlar dressings. The church features a brick plinth, two horizontal string courses, a sill band, a moulded cornice, cogged and dentillated eaves, a stone-coped parapet and gable, and five projecting panelled pilaster caps. It is two storeys high and comprises five bays. The Romanesque style facade has a central round-headed doorway with a hood mould, keystone, and rusticated panels, supported by polished granite shafts with moulded bases and waterleaf capitals and containing a double door with a stained glass overlight. It is flanked by single gault brick pilasters with Corinthian capitals, and similar corner pilasters. Above the doorway, a central round arched opening with a hood mould contains paired round-headed fixed lights supported by three granite shafts with waterleaf capitals. Curved brackets are present at the sill band. Above this is a roundel inscribed ‘1878’, flanked by single round-headed fixed lights with bracketed sills and stone lintels. A quatrefoil opening is situated in the gable. The south side includes five two-light casements with segmental gault brick heads within recessed panels, and four similar casements above, also with round gault brick heads. To the west are three two-light and one single-light casements with segmental heads. Inside the entrance hall, single doors are positioned either side, flanking panelled curved stairs to a gallery. The interior features matchboard panelling to the dado, a deep moulded decorative cornice, and plaster foliate ceiling bosses. All windows contain patterned stained glass. At the rear, three round cast-iron columns support a curved timber gallery. At the front, a moulded coffered elliptical arch is flanked by antae with leaf capitals. A panelled screen with a part-glazed door on either side leads to further spaces, above which is an elaborate panelled organ gallery with matching organ case. The church’s fittings include a large traceried, panelled pulpit on curved brackets, flanked by curved stairs with square turned balusters. A matchboarded surround exists around the communion table, along with a communion rail also featuring square turned balusters. There are three matching chairs and plain chamfered pine pews. Memorial tablets date from 1877 and 1924.
