Description

The Youth and Community Centre, originally a Board School, was built in 1872 and has had some additions in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with gault brick and ashlar dressings, featuring both fishscale and plain slate and lead roofs, along with two side wall stacks and one ridge stack. The building has a brick plinth and decorative brick bands for the sill, lintel, and eaves, with cogged eaves. It is a single storey structure with six bays in a T plan.

The east front gable features a central pointed-arched opening with a splayed sill and tripartite mullioned and transomed casements. Above this is a decorative band and a quatrefoil opening. To the right, there is a slightly projecting square tower with two stages, topped by a pyramidal roof adorned with iron ornament. The tower has a triangular-headed door with a decorative lintel and a lozenge-shaped datestone inscribed with "Board Schools, 1872." The second stage has a chamfered plinth and a decorative teardrop opening with a clock, along with similar blank openings on the north and south sides. At the rear, there is an unglazed lancet.

On the south side, there is an off-centre pair of gabled dormers, each containing a tripartite pointed-headed casement. To the left of the dormers are two two-light mullioned and transomed casements, and to the right are six more. Above these, there are two gabled dormer ventilators. The rear gable and the right wing gables all feature pointed-arched tripartite mullioned and transomed casements, while the remaining windows are segmental-headed two-light casements.
