Description

The Malthouse, also known as Bell Farmhouse, is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with a facade that was altered in the early 20th century. It is timber framed, with the front elevation cement rendered. The right gable end features red brick on the ground floor, while the first floor is adorned with banded plain and fishscale tiles. The building has a plain tile roof and consists of five timber-framed bays, with a continuous jetty at the rear, which was likely also present at the front originally. It stands two storeys high on a plinth, with projecting eaves that have a flat soffit. The roof is steeply pitched and hipped, with gablets, and there are two red brick stacks, one on the front slope of the roof towards the left end and another in the right hip. The fenestration is irregular, featuring five early 20th-century two and three-light ovolo-moulded mullioned casements with top lights, along with two ground-floor canted bay windows. A half-glazed and panelled door is located towards the centre, topped by a flat bracketed corniced hood. There are additions to the rear from the third quarter of the 19th century and from 1910. Inside, the building has plain crown-posts, with two curved braces pointing downward and two pointing upward, along with one moulded octagonal crown-post at the right end. The timbers are exposed, and the left end of the attic previously housed grain bins.
