Description

Borden Cottages, located on East Street in Harrietsham, is a pair of houses dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the early to mid-19th century. The first house, No. 1, is timber framed with a front elevation featuring a chequered pattern of red and grey brick, while the rear is tile-hung on the ground floor and first floor. It has a plain tile roof and follows a lobby entry plan with four bays, including a stack bay. The left end bay may have been rebuilt slightly later. The building stands two storeys high on a short stone plinth, with a hipped roof that connects to No. 2 on the right. There is a brick ridge stack towards the left end and another at the right end, shared with No. 2. The front has irregular fenestration, including one long blind window from the eaves to the top of the front door, two glazing-bar sashes in open boxes, a blocked ground-floor window to the left of the stack, and glazing-bar sashes below the first-floor windows, all with segmental heads. The entrance features a panelled door with a flat-corniced hood beneath the stack. At the rear, there is a short 19th-century lean-to on the left. The interior includes exposed timbers and an iron range.

No. 2, which may have originally served as a coach-house and stables, dates from the late 18th century and is also constructed of chequered red and grey brick with a plain tile roof. It projects slightly forward from No. 1 and stands two storeys high on a brick plinth. The front features one 19th-century two-light casement window to the left and a three-light ground-floor casement with a segmental head to the right. There is a blocked door beneath the first-floor window and another door at the rear. The interior of No. 2 has not been inspected.
