Description

This is a house, now divided into a row of houses, dating back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. The building is timber framed, with the ground floor built of painted brick and the first floor rendered in channeled stucco. The roof is covered with plain tiles. Originally a Wealden house, only part of the storeyed right end bay and the right bay of the open hall remain. The left bay of the open hall was rebuilt in the early 18th century to resemble the underbuilt jettied right end bay, possibly incorporating remnants of the original inner and flying wall-plates to create a cavity wall.

The building has two storeys and sits on a stone plinth. The right end bay was formerly jettied, with a bracket still visible. A plain bracket is located beneath a central tie beam of the hall, now at the left end of the recess. The roof is steeply pitched and hipped, with gablets. Brick stacks project from the rear of the left side elevation, from the front of the right side elevation, and from the rear of the right bay of the hall. The windows are irregularly placed and feature ovolo-moulded mullioned casements; one of four lights is in the recess, and one of two lights is in the right end bay. Ground-floor windows include a four-light casement to the recess, and two-light casements to each end bay. A half-glazed and panelled door is located on the right end of the recess. A later rear lean-to has been added.

Inside, the central hall features hollow-chamfered posts with moulded braces and a moulded crown post. Ogee braces are visible to the right end of the hall partition. Other interior features include exposed timbers and an inglenook recess in the rear wall of the right hall bay.
