Description

Bell House is a former public house, dating to the 16th century or earlier, with a front range built in 1729. The front range has a ground floor of coursed galletted stone and a first floor of painted brick in Flemish bond. It has a plain tile roof, a moulded stone plinth, a plat band above three of the first-floor windows, boxed eaves, and a hipped roof. A rear stack is located at the left end. The fenestration is regular, featuring four glazing bar sashes in open boxes. Late 19th-century sashes with horns are present on the ground floor. The front door is half-glazed and panelled, with a rectangular fanlight above, enclosed within a heavy, late 19th-century bracketed hood with a dentilled frieze and moulded triangular pediment. A datestone is set into the first floor. The rear wing to the left consists of two sections. One section is timber-framed and tile-hung with a plain tile roof, and incorporates a single bay adjoining the front range; a large red brick stack is at the rear end, set into the right slope of the roof. Approximately two further timber-framed bays are present, with a more steeply pitched roof, alongside a lean-to to the left side, a hip to the rear, and a small stack. A short return wing to the right, dating to the 19th century, is constructed of brick and tile-hanging. The interior was only partly inspected.
