Description

Brenchleys and Little Brenchleys is a house, now a row of houses, built in 1632 with an early 18th-century facade and later alterations. It is probably timber-framed, with a facade made of painted brick in Flemish bond and a plain tile roof. The building has a lobby entry and consists of two storeys and an attic on a stone plinth, featuring a moulded wood eaves cornice and a hipped roof. There is a red brick ridge stack off-centre to the right and a slightly projecting red brick stack to the left, which may be shared with No. 3. A broad hipped dormer, likely from the 19th century, is located off-centre to the left. The irregular fenestration includes four windows: three glazing-bar sashes in open boxes (one with a painted brick apron and one with thick glazing bars) and one sash with horns. The door to Brenchleys, located beneath the stack, is probably from the 18th century and features fielded panels and a broad flat corniced hood. Above the door is a decorated plaster panel dated 1632. The door to Little Brenchleys, adjacent to the right, is a 19th-century panelled door with a three-light rectangular fanlight and smaller flat corniced hoods, with both doors accessed by three steps. There is a narrow two-storey parallel rear range, likely from the 18th century or later. The interior has not been inspected.
