Description
Church Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-15th century, with a facade that was altered in the early to mid-19th century. The building is timber-framed, with the ground floor of the front elevation clad in a chequered pattern of red and grey brick, while the first floor is hung with alternating bands of plain and fishscale tiles. The ground floor and first floor of the left gable end are weatherboarded.
The structure consists of four timber-framed bays, featuring an open hall made up of two slightly unequal-length bays, with a cross passage located in the shorter left end bay, and storeyed end bays. It stands two storeys high with a garret on a stone plinth. The left gable end is jettied, and the roof is half-hipped with a gablet on the left side and hipped on the right. There is a multiple brick ridge stack that is off-centre to the left.
The fenestration is irregular, comprising three windows: one three-light and two two-light leaded casements, with no windows to the left of the stack. A panelled door with two top lights is positioned slightly to the left of the stack and is sheltered by a flat bracketed hood. At the rear, there is a lean-to addition.
Inside, the farmhouse features exposed framing, with two adjacent four-centred arched doorheads and solid spandrels between the former ground-floor passage and the left end bay. The interior also includes large gunstock jowls and a moulded central crown-post on a cambered tie-beam that was formerly heavily braced. Additionally, there are ogee end-of-hall braces on the first floor.
