Description
North Cottage and South Cottage is a 17th-century house or house row located on the east side of Staplehurst High Street. The building is timber-framed, featuring exposed posts with red brick infilling in stretcher bond on the ground floor, while the first floor is tile-hung. The exposed framing includes close-set thin scantling studs, an almost straight tension brace, and a jowled post on the left gable end. The structure consists of approximately four timber-framed bays and has two low storeys plus a garret. It has a continuous jetty with a rendered bressumer and a half-hipped roof. A multiple red and grey brick stack is located on the third timber-framed bay from the left. The windows display irregular fenestration, including three casements: a deep three-light window to the left, a single-light window to the left of the stack, and a two-light window to the right. There are boarded shutters on the two left ground-floor windows and three boarded doors located towards the left end, at the right end of the broad left-central bay, and at the right end. A brick lean-to with a rendered gable is attached to the right end, along with a rear lean-to. The interior has not been inspected. This building was formerly known as Loddenden Cottages.
