Description
The Old Cottage and Wealden Cottage is a house pair, likely built in the late 16th century, with alterations from the 17th and late 18th centuries. The structure is timber framed, featuring red brick infilling, except for the first floor of the right half, which is tile-hung. The left gable end is made of red brick in Flemish bond with exposed posts, while the right side is rendered. The roof is covered with plain tiles and is hipped on the left side and gabled on the right.
The building is arranged at right angles to the road and faces west, standing two storeys tall on a flint plinth. It has a continuous jetty with a boarded fascia, supported by moulded solid-spandrel brackets that return to the left and right on moulded dragon posts. The gable-end jetties are underbuilt, with the right end featuring 17th-century-style brickwork and a moulded corbel beneath the jetty. The left gable-end jetty extends along the rear.
The house has an irregular arrangement of windows, including one sixteen-pane sash window in the left bay (or cross-wing), a small single-light casement in the stack bay, and a three-light casement in each of the right bays. The ground floor features three sixteen-pane sashes in open boxes. Each bay, except for the second from the left, has two studs that are morticed for an oriel or bay window, with evidence suggesting a similar arrangement on the first floor. There is a boarded door located under the stack, and a later red brick lean-to has been added to the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
