Description

Marsh Cottage is a house that was formerly two cottages, located on Lower Road in Old Romney. The left bay of the building is timber-framed and dates from the mid-16th century or earlier, while the right section is likely from the 18th century and features an 18th-century facade with 19th-century alterations. The exterior is timber-framed and clad in red brick, with some grey bricks arranged in a Flemish bond, topped by a plain tile roof.

The house has two storeys and a two-course plat band. It features a hipped roof with a gablet on the left side, a red brick stack on the front slope of the roof towards the centre, and two slender projecting end stacks. The windows are arranged irregularly, with four casements in total: two two-light windows on the left and two 20th-century three-light windows on the right. The ground floor windows have segmental heads, and there is a blocked doorway to the left of centre. A ribbed door is located towards the right end, sheltered by a flat bracketed hood. To the left, there is a short timber-framed rear wing, likely from the 18th century, which includes stairs, along with a rear lean-to.

Inside, the cottage features exposed timbers, including a cambered tie-beam on the left that shows evidence of a crown-post.
