Description

Wheelsgate is a farmhouse that likely dates from the early 17th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The building features a heavily timber-framed structure, with the main range clad in pinkish-red brick laid in Flemish bond, while the wing and "stair turret" are covered in a chequered pattern of red and grey brick. The roof is made of plain tiles.

The main range appears to follow a lobby entry plan, or has been adapted to one, and includes a cross-wing on the right that slightly projects forward. There is a 2-storey stair turret, which is integrated with the brickwork, located to the right of the wing. The farmhouse stands two storeys high, with the wing featuring a garret. A plat band runs along the wing and turret, and the main range has a plain parapet. The main range has a half-hipped roof to the left, while the wing has a half-hipped roof at the front and the stair turret is gabled.

The building has a multiple brick ridge stack at the center of the main range and a large projecting stack on the right wall of the wing, positioned behind the stair turret. The windows are arranged irregularly, with three in total: one 2-light casement towards the center (to the left of the stack), and one taller 3-light casement to the right in the main range. The wing features a 2-light garret casement and a 16-pane glazing bar sash on the first floor, which has a segmental relieving arch above it. Each floor of the stair turret has a 2-light casement with a segmental head. There is a stable door with a segmental head beneath the left-hand window, and a panelled door with two top lights located under the stack, topped with a flat corniced hood. The wing has French doors that are also fitted with a flat hood supported on consoles. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
