Description

MATERIALS: wrought iron and Doulting stone.

DESCRIPTION: Elham War Memorial stands in a prominent position at the northern end of High Street. It consists of a decorative metal cross bearing the figure of Christ crucified and ornamented with gilded sun bursts. That rises from the moulded capital of the tapering, octagonal shaft. The shaft stands on a square plinth that is raised on a round, five-stepped, base. The memorial is surrounded by a small concrete pavement and kerb.

The north-facing side of the plinth bears an inscription that reads 1914 – 1918/ IN MEMORIAM/ R.I.P. The other faces of the plinth list the names of the men who fell in the First World War. In addition, an inscription around the top step of the base reads ALSO/1939 – 1945, with the names of those who fell in the Second World War listed with it. All inscriptions are incised.

This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 30 November 2016.
