Description
The Steeple Ashton War Memorial is a tall stone cross located at the corner of Church Street and High Street in Steeple Ashton. At the top of the memorial is a Latin cross that rises from a decorated limestone shaft. The capital of the shaft features carved acanthus leaves, while the shaft itself is adorned with a twisting rope pattern and roses carved in low relief.
The front face of the cross shaft is inscribed with the dates 1939-1945, and the names of those who fell during the Second World War are listed on the other faces. The shaft stands on a square plinth, which bears the names of the dead from the First World War. This plinth is set on a circular base with two steps. The main dedicatory inscription on the front of the plinth reads 1914 - 1918/ OUR/ VALIANT/ DEAD.
Additionally, there is a stone flower vase inscribed with BEST KEPT/ WAR/ MEMORIAL/ 1963 on the upper step of the base, and a planter on the lower step. The memorial is situated within a paved area, which is separated from the footway by a low wall and can be accessed by two steps. These subsidiary features are not considered of special interest.
