Description
These are a pair of cottages located on Church Street, Steeple Ashton. The cottages were originally built in the 17th century and were largely rebuilt in the 19th century. They were formerly timber-framed and are now constructed of English bond brick and rubble stone, with a tiled roof featuring bands of fishscale tiles and gable end brick stacks. There is also ceramic ridge cresting.
The cottages are two storeys high, with a three-window front. They have two planked doors, each with a gabled canopy, and three three-light casement windows on the ground floor. The first floor has three three-light casements and two two-light casements. The right return has some blocked openings and a raised roofline. The left return has a lean-to extension. A two-storey rear extension is also present.
Inside No. 17, there are chamfered beams and timber-framed partitions. The cottages are a combination of original and later construction; two bays on the right hand side are a rebuild of the 17th century cottage in stone, while the left hand bay was added in brick.
