Description

Two semi-detached cottages stand in a row in The Strand, Steeple Ashton. They date to the late 16th century. The buildings are characterised by square-panelled timber framing with painted brick infill, and a pantiled roof with a brick stack on the right-hand side. The cottages are two storeys high, with a three-window facade. Number 2 has a planked door, and a brick-built addition to the right, featuring a two-light casement window on either side. Number 4 has a six-panelled door with a two-light casement to its left. The first floor has three two-light casement windows. The left-hand return wall features a three-light casement window on the ground floor and a two-light casement above. The rear wall has been rebuilt in brick and includes single-storey extensions.

The interior of Number 2 retains original features, including planked doors with strap hinges, deep chamfered beams, a partly blocked open fireplace, a door with two fielded panels, and a cupboard with fielded panel doors in a room to the left of the entrance. The staircase has turned balusters against the rear wall. The interior of Number 4 was not accessible for inspection during the survey in February 1987.
