Description
The Manston War Memorial is a stone structure located on a small green at the junction of High Street and Preston Road, surrounded by railings. It features a simple Latin cross with a moulded foot, which is set on a short octagonal column. This column rises from a chamfered plinth that sits on a square base. The memorial stands 2.7 metres tall.
On the front (south) face of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads "1914 – 1919/ IN HONOURED/ MEMORY," carved in low relief. The names of those who died in the First World War are listed on the sides of the plinth. Additionally, the rear of the plinth has an inscription that states "TO THOSE/ WHO FELL/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR," with a later inscription below it that reads "IN HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ (4 NAMES)." These inscriptions are incised and painted black.
