Preston War Memorial

Preston War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated in the churchyard to the east of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, which is also listed at Grade II*. The memorial stands on a square area of paving.

Constructed from Clipsham stone, the memorial features a Latin cross atop a tall, tapering octagonal shaft that has a moulded collar and stop-chamfered stops. This shaft rises from a four-sided plinth with moulded upper corners, which sits on a two-stepped, square base. At each corner of the lower step of the base, there are four square stone flower holders, with a fifth holder located adjacent to the memorial on the south side.

Stone panels have been added to the faces of the plinth, displaying the First World War dedication and names. The dedication on the east face of the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE/ PRESTON MEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919." The names of twelve individuals who died are inscribed on the north and south faces of the plinth. Additionally, the west face bears the inscription: "THEIR NAME/ LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE."

On the east face of the upper step of the base, there is a stone panel with the Second World War dedication: "AND THOSE WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945." Two casualties from this conflict are recorded, one on a stone panel on the north face of the base and the other on a similar panel on the south face. All lettering is incised and painted black.
