Description
Preshute War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1919, with additions for the Second World War. It is located on a raised mound in the churchyard of the Church of St George, which is a Grade II*-listed building, to the south-east of the chancel.
The memorial is made of granite and features a tall, tapering Latin cross that rises from a rough-hewn, four-sided, tapering plinth. The inscriptions and names are presented in incised lettering on the plinth and the cross shaft.
The main inscription is found in a recessed panel on the east face of the plinth, which reads, "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF PRESHUTE/ WHO FELL IN THE WAR/ 1914 – 1919." Above this, on the east face of the shaft, are the 16 names of those who died in the First World War, positioned below a carved cross pattée symbol within a circle.
On the north face of the plinth, the dates "1939 – 1945" are incised into a recessed panel. Above this, on the north face of the shaft, are the 8 names of those who died in the Second World War.
