Description

BATH ROAD (north side) Cotton House

II 1870 (designed). 1871-72 built. Architect G.E Street. Like Littlefield, built in concrete to the patent method of Charles Drake. Cement rendering. A little tile-hanging under eaves, but otherwise no attempt to conceal the material. Brick strings at plinth and first floor sill level. Pitched tile roofs. Tall brick stacks with elaborate cornicing.

Three storeys and basements. Study and dormitory wing has two storeys and attics. Irregular plan, each part with its own pitched roof. Very steep proportions. Mullioned and transomed casements in flush frames, with moulded cornices over (no transoms on second floor). Study windows single-light. Two storey bay on south side, of which the first floor is hung with fish-scale tiles. Two attic dormers to dormitory have tile-hung cheeks and rendered gable ends with simple pargetting of vaguely zodiacal patterns. Two doors, to housemaster's and to boys' part, both planked, with contemporary iron hinges and mullioned oblong fanlight.
