Description
The Lugwardine War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1919, with later additions for the Second World War. It is located prominently at the north-east corner of the churchyard, at the crossroads in the center of the village, near the Church of St Peter, which is a Grade II* listed building, and a medieval churchyard cross, also Grade II listed.
The memorial features a floriated stone Latin cross atop a tapering octagonal shaft, supported by a substantial square plinth and a three-stepped octagonal base.
The main inscription, carved in incised lettering on the west face of the plinth, reads: "IN MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO MADE THE/ SUPREME SACRIFICE/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ 1914 – 1918/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the other three faces of the plinth.
On the western face of the upper step of the base, there is an additional inscription: "1939 – 1945." The names of the fallen from the Second World War are listed on the two adjacent faces of the upper step.
