Description
Caddington War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of All Saints, which is also listed at Grade II*. The memorial stands nearly 4 meters high and takes the form of a Celtic cross. The head of the cross features interlace trefoils and rises from a square-sectioned shaft, which is set on a tapering plinth. The plinth itself rests on a two-stepped, square base.
The main dedicatory inscription on the plinth reads: "IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS.”/ ERECTED BY PARISHIONERS & FRIENDS." The names of those who fell in the First World War are carved into the remaining three sides of the plinth, organized by year and date of death. The names of those who served in the Second World War are listed beneath the inscription "AND IN THE WAR 1939 – 1945" on the top step.
