Description

Chapel House and Providence Street Baptist Chapel is a house and chapel located on Chapel Lane in Staplehurst. The house dates from the 17th century or early 18th century, while the chapel was built in the 19th century. The house is timber framed, with the ground floor clad in beaded weatherboarding and the first floor tile-hung. It has a plain tile roof and is oriented at right angles to the lane, facing west. The building has two storeys and an attic, set on a low brick plinth. The roof is half-hipped to the left (north) and extends to meet the chapel on the right. There are two small hipped dormers with moulded wooden cornices and leaded two-light casements. The front features a regular three-window arrangement of leaded wooden cross windows, with the center window being narrower. A central half-glazed door is located under a flat corniced and bracketed hood, and there is a rear lean-to. The interior has not been inspected.

The chapel is also timber framed and weatherboarded, with a plain tile roof. It is built at right angles to the house and projects slightly from the right gable end. The chapel is two storeys high and stands on a red and grey brick plinth. The broad front gable end has a recessed paned light in the gable and a regular two-window arrangement of recessed four-paned lights on the first floor. The ground floor features two recessed eight-paned lights, each with a broad hinged panelled shutter, and there are central panelled double doors. A rendered single-storey gabled extension is located on the south side of the chapel. The interior has not been inspected.
