Description

Church House is a house that was formerly cottages, dating from the 16th century or earlier, and restored in the 20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with plaster infilling and a plain tile roof. The building consists of six timber-framed bays, with the left end bay and possibly the second from the left being later additions. It is two storeys high and has a stone plinth that is higher under the left end bay. The right side has a gable end jetty. The close-studding is broadly spaced, with a higher midrail in the third bay from the right. The second bay from the right includes an intermediate rail near the base of each storey. There are five arch-braces that are asymmetrically placed, and the roof is hipped. A multiple brick ridge stack is located at the right end of the third bay from the right. The building has an irregular arrangement of ten windows, which includes eight small single-light casements, one three-light diamond mullion window in the left end bay, and a tall seven-light diamond mullion window situated between the eaves and the intermediate rail of the second bay from the right. Below this, there is a similar six-light window between the midrail and the intermediate rail on the ground floor. The left end of the third bay from the right features a ribbed door set in a hollow-chamfered four-centred arched architrave with hollow spandrels, while another ribbed door is located in the centre of the fifth bay from the right. The interior has not been inspected. The building is marked as Church Cottages on the Ordnance Survey map.
