Description

Walnut Tree Cottage is a house that was formerly two cottages, dating from the mid-14th century, with alterations made in the late 16th to early 17th centuries, the 19th century, and a 20th-century addition. The building is timber-framed, with the front elevation clad in 19th-century chequered red and grey brick, while the upper part of the right gable end is tile-hung. It features a plain tile roof and consists of two timber-framed bays from the mid-14th century, with a late 16th to early 17th-century bay added to the left end. The house has one storey and attics, with a projecting stack on the left and a gable end stack on the right. There are three eaves dormers with lobed bargeboards, the central one being a 20th-century addition. The front has three casement windows with segmental heads, the central one having been a door, and there is a 20th-century door on the left gable end. To the left, there is a two-storey rear wing from the 1970s, which is tile-hung on the first floor. Inside, the cottage features exposed framing, with a moulded beam at the left end of the hall. The hall is quasi-aisled, with an extended arch brace to the cambered central tie-beam and a moulded crown-post. It has jowled posts and a double-chamfered arcade plate, which was formerly arch-braced. There is also an inserted floor from the late 16th to early 17th century, making this a highly unusual structure.
